Painting Description

This rare oil painting by John Dyer celebrates the fishing heritage of Cornwall and the intriguing story of the cats and rabbits of Cadgwith on the Lizard in Cornwall. Painted in 1994, but now released for sale from the artist's private collection, the oil painting beautifully integrates symbolism, shape and narrative to tell the story of Cadgwith. Find out more below:

'The Cat Chasing the Rabbit, Cadgwith(1994) is layered with multiple meanings and symbols. As well as being a picturesque fishing village on The Lizard, Cadgwith is also known for having an unusual number of both cats and rabbits. Though not obvious at first sight in this bird’s-eye view, a closer look reveals two cats and a rabbit as underlying negative shapes in a busy semi-abstract composition which is otherwise dominated by images relating to fishing: crabbers with their red flags and red marker buoys; fishermen’s huts and cottages; and the Christian symbol of a simplified fish.' John Dyer (born 1968)

"There is an innocence and freshness to John Dyer's art that follows a tradition in Cornwall that includes the paintings of Cornwall by Alfred Wallis, Christopher Wood, Fred Yates and Bryan Pearce. Rather than trying to record what he sees, John sets out to capture the 'essence' of his subject. The 'essence' of seagulls, cats, dogs, bobbing boats, or exploding fireworks communicate far more strongly through John's brushstrokes than they would if drawn more traditionally. It is this ability to capture the 'essence' of what is important that seems to appeal to his collectors who have shown great vision and originality in their own careers, such as Tim Smit, Alan Titchmarsh, Toyah Willcox & Kim Wilde."

Frequently asked questions

◽️ Yes this painting can last for generations if cared for

• The very best art materials have been used for this painting making it museum-quality art that can be handed down to new generations of your family. We recommend not hanging in full sunshine as this can impact all works of art.

• The painting has been created by the artist with a single medium of paint with extremely permanent colour and stability.

◽️ Yes we ship worldwide for free

• A few working days after you order we will email you your tracking number and delivery details. For larger paintings in the mainland UK we use a specialist art courier who will telephone you to arrange the delivery.

◽️ Yes, you can order from your billing address but request delivery to another address if you wish

◽️ Yes we can arrange international deliveries

• We expertly pack all our paintings at the gallery and use international couriers to get the paintings securely to your door.

◽️ We don't charge you for delivery, so if there are some charges to import in your country you only have to pay those and not the delivery costs

• Paintings are sent from the UK using the export and commodity code: 9701910000 normally this classification entitles goods to be free of import duties (not necessarily local VAT/TVA) in most countries. The decision is however on the border and point of import. This is not in our control. We recommend you check your local import duties in your country but we have never had any issues in over 30 years of exporting art as our collectors understand that if we pay for the delivery any import costs are easily paid at their end.

◽️ We will start to prepare your painting immediately.

• We check the painting and frame and then very carefully pack the painting. This does take a few working days and we will arrange delivery shortly after that. Normally we expect to get smaller paintings out to you in around five working days.

• For larger paintings it takes slightly longer and we will be in touch with expected delivery dates shortly after purchase.
