Limited Edition Print. Beagle in the Bay by John Dyer (Darwin 200 artist in residence)
One of John Dyer's offical works for his residency for the Dawin 200 celebrations. The artist has cleverly shown Darwin's tallship the Beagle sailing into Falmouth where she originally returned to on her famous voyage. A beagle dog watches from a boat and a diverse range of bird species and fish (including mermaids!) join the party. John captures the underwater view, a diver and creatures too.
"I was asked to be the artist in residence for the official Darwin 200 celebrations and this painting was one of the collection painted during my residency. It brings together the feel of the tall ships in Falmouth with Darwin's homecoming. Darwin returned from his epic journey and docked in Falmouth in his boat the Beagle - it was the equivalent of the moon landings in those times and caused quite an event. The painting depicts the Beagle sailing into Falmouth with a menagerie of tropical birds following and it also has a Beagle and Brian Stewart, the acclaimed curator of Falmouth Art Gallery at the time, depicted in the small boat too ! A celebration of the past and present." John Dyer
